Kaiwi, Pailolo and Kealaikahiki are the main channels in the Hawaiian islands where the whales migrate.
About the Collaboration :
NONOLO KANALOA OCEANIC MELODIES
The intent instilled in our art has always been based on relationship and connection to place. Extending beyond the shores, these elements celebrate our bonds to one of the oldest mammals to traverse our Hawaiian channels.
This print, initially commissioned for family, highlights the vibrations, clicks, and melodies of a whales song. Similar to the reverberations in a chant, these acoustics can travel vast distances below the ocean’s surface. The linear art within this print was inspired by a koholā melody recorded near the Pailolo Channel between Maui and Molokaʻi.
We humbly honor our koholā and palaoa, and the practitioners that mālama this space.
